P004 → Wilton’s Music Hall [2017]

In November 2017, East London’s Grade II listed Wilton’s Music Hall — the oldest Grand Music Hall in the world — opened its doors to Storybox: Tales of Absence, ‘What Ifs’ and Salvation, an exhibition of new work by members of The Storybox Collective inspired by Wilton’s archive.

Wilton’s archive holds not only the history of the building and its surroundings, but also traces of the many people who have walked its floors and treaded its boards. The Storybox Collective were named by the V&A as the first researchers granted access to Wilton’s paper archive.

Themes uncovered and reinterpreted by the Collective include: the women of Wilton’s; tea and Christianity; textiles and identity; and the handwritten sermon notes of the Reverend Tom Collins — transformed into words that question and subvert their own meaning
